BLOG 265: ONE OF MY FAVOURITES…

It’s a difficult thing, I think, for a poet to pick out their favourites pieces of work. I find it very hard to put together portfolios and it took me almost forever to pick out a selection for my poetry book last year. But I will say this: sometimes you write a poem and think ‘hey, I love this piece’ or ‘there’s something special about this poem’.

This is one of those poems. It’s one that is close to my heart. I hope you guys like it too.

Drum Solo

We were in that space,
where the world had stopped
and it was just our hands
wandering,
as we listened to music
that never stopped or faded out.

It was a bottle of wine, and Phil Collins,
and kissing, and waiting for the drum solo.
It was the way you fell back on the sofa,
spelling out:

“I want you, now.”
“I want you, here.”
“I want you to want me, now.
“I want you to want me, here.”

I spelled out an “Okay.” with the way I held you.

We were in that space,
where the world has stopped,
and it was just my hands,
wrapped around you,
as we listened to music
that eventually f a d e d out.
